The Thrill of a Ceramix platter featured with South Africa’s premier ceramists at the Corobrik National Ceramics Biennale. November 19, 2018 08:50

Wall of Plates at Rust-en-Vrede Gallery featuring a Ceramix Platter

I feel the most exhilarating tingle of delight when I am see my work together with South Africa’s premier ceramists. It is so amazing to see my platter in such a gorgeous display at the Corobrik National Ceramics Biennale at the Rust-en-Vrede Gallery in Durbanville Cape Town. I wish I could be there in person to view the stunning work up close and personal. I feel totally inspired!

Corobrik National Ceramics Biennale Features a Ceramix Stoneware Platter! October 21, 2018 22:29

I’m overjoyed to tell you that my stoneware platter ‘Escaped’, was selected for the wall of plates at the Corobrick National Ceramics Exhibition. This stoneware platter is one of the first ones I made and it’s completely different to any of the others. I did not pursue the method used on ‘Escape’ on any other platters since I attempted to create depth through layers of glaze, not fine brushwork.

Why I am changing my name. October 17, 2018 23:40

Large Stoneware Sea Delight Platter by Margaret Melville from the Ceramix Pottery in South Africa

I have put my name Margaret Melville Hugo on the backs of my new range of platters in under glaze and MRMH is also engraved. This will be the last time that the name Margaret Melville Hugo will appear on any of my work.

What do you feel about entering products you make in competitions? October 11, 2018 10:50 2 Comments

Do you enter competitions? I always have to have something that completely and utterly motivates me in order to start with new things this is the reason I am entering the competition. I certainly cannot enter a white Terracotta plate with a glazed addition for the nationals. What am I going to do? Gillian Clark has asked me repeatedly why I am not making the very large ceramic serving platters. The truth is that they are just too large for me to dip into the glaze.  Then it dawns on me that I have a wide variety of coloured mid-range brush on glazes that fire to 1200 Degrees. You have seen the first tests here. After giving it a great deal of thought I decide that one cannot submit a plain plate with no form of decoration just because the glaze looks pretty. I need to add depth to the platter.  This is how my journey begins.

Yarn bowls and Carlien McPhee crochet characters. September 10, 2018 18:44 2 Comments

Morris the Fearsome Dragon crochet character by Carlien McPhee and yarn bowl by Margaret Melville Hugo at Ceramix

Carlien McPhee loves to crochet character toys for the people who surround her who she feels need cheering up. She does not sell her toys as she makes them for fun. They are meticulously detailed even down to the last little freckles. Their limbs are usually wired which makes them fully poseable. Every little character toy she makes has a story. Watch this YouTube Video with Angus and Morris Building a Castle. It is too adorable for words. I have included Carlien's little stories of her characters with each photograph so be sure to read them. I find these stories so touching in their simplicity. No detailed explanations are given everything is just as it is.
